PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- Brown University informed its students and faculty Wednesday that one of its students has been confirmed as having swine flu.
"This individual was likely exposed to H1N1 in New York, and is recovering well," Russell C. Carey, Brown's senior vice president and chief risk officer, and Margaret Klawunn, the school's vice president of campus life and student services, wrote in an e-mail to the Brown community.
The disclosure comes as relatives and friends of graduates and alumni are set to visit the university this weekend for forums and reunions related to Sunday's commencement.
The adminsitrators said they have been advised by the Rhode Island Department of Health, which confirmed the swine flu case, that there is no need to adjust any of the weekend events.
"The most important thing Brown community members, and our guests arriving on campus this weekend, can do to prevent the spread of illness is to practice preventive behaviors, including frequent hand washing with soap and water or use of hand sanitizers and staying home if you are sick," the administrators wrote.
The administrators said the school will have hand-sanitizer stations in high-traffic areas this weekend.
